A New Look, A New Light – The Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts

The renowned art museum in Little Rock reopened following an extensive renovation and expansion.

In April 2023, the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts celebrated its long-awaited reopening with a festive ceremony attended by distinguished politicians and leading figures from the arts community, following three years of renovation, expansion, and restoration work.

Formerly known as the Arkansas Arts Center, the renowned institution for visual arts and arts education in Little Rock, Arkansas, has been transformed with a striking new addition designed by the acclaimed Chicago-based architectural practice Studio Gang. Beneath a sculptural, folded roof, the architects skillfully unify the museum’s existing buildings while linking them through a distinctive new circulation space. With its organic, branching form, this central element evokes the structure of a leaf or a flower in bloom.

This iconic architectural gesture—known as the “Blossom”—is elegantly integrated with the landscape concept developed by SCAPE Landscape Architecture, which carefully embeds the museum within the public setting of the historic MacArthur Park.

It has been developed an integrated and atmospheric lighting concept that responds to the building’s diverse functional requirements while enhancing its architectural character. The design provides tailored lighting solutions that balance functionality and ambiance, creating appropriate environments for a wide range of users and activities.

Working in collaboration with the local architectural firm Polk Stanley Wilcox, the project has resulted in a remarkable cultural destination whose compelling architectural design and dynamic program are set to attract visitors from across the United States and around the world to the capital of the state of Arkansas.
