Work in Transition: Am Postbahnhof Berlin
The Postbahnhof in Berlin, set in the lively area around Ostbahnhof and rooted in the historic fabric of former railway infrastructure, has been transformed by &MICA and driessenarchitekten from Berlin as a contemporary hub for work and commerce. Initiated by a private developer, the project set out to preserve the character of the existing structure while opening it to flexible, modern uses. Today, it brings together offices, social spaces, and food venues, functioning as a hybrid environment that reflects the evolving nature of the city.
A key strength of the design lies in how it engages with the existing building. The original viaduct, with its distinctive arches, remains clearly visible and is carefully complemented by new additions. The exterior balances an industrial feel with refined, contemporary detailing, while inside, exposed concrete meets crisp, modern interventions. At the center, there is a characteristic atrium that links old and new, opening visual connections across all levels. Historic elements such as the listed tower and the former rail turntable have been seamlessly integrated, giving the project a strong sense of identity.
