The realization of a luminous wall sculpture – Marriott Hotel, Berlin

On exactly the same spot where, 115 years ago, the former Hotel Bellevue was constructed, the Marriott Hotel opened its doors in January 2004, continuing the tradition of this historic site. With its luminous wall sculpture the Berlin Marriott Hotel represents a concentrated moment of architectural introspection within a strongly dynamic environment – both inside and out.

The 30-meter-high and 10-metre-wide luminous wall sculpture is vertically structured by an architectural grid placed in front of it. The wall itself is made of 72 individual panels of expanded copper mesh, which seem to glow from inside themselves thanks to LED components installed on the sides. Illuminated by grazing light, the panels suggest a spatial depth across the entire wall. On close inspection the scene changes to a diffuse picture that defies precise interpretation. The visual impression varies according to the position of the observer within the space. Depending on the viewing angle, differing image compositions are generated that are reminiscent of moving cloud landscapes. A lighting control system supports the installation with a number of individual light scenarios, such as gently trickling golden light that prompts associations with waterfalls.

LED light strips with narrow beam characteristic serve as light sources. Altogether 152 luminaires have been installed in the luminous wall: almost 220 meters of LED profile, fitted with around 3,100 LED modules and a total of 31,000 individual LED bulbs. A lens system focuses the golden light of every light diode. Since the entire installation largely depends on the viewing angle, the panels had to be installed so as to create an absolutely even surface across the wall.

Four pre-programmed light scenarios can be easily selected via a switchboard integrated into the reception desk. An overriding timer and a main switch determine the general operational periods of the light installation.
