Inaugurated in summer 2016, the Vocational College of the Archbishopric Cologne is now one of the most important educational facilities for social professions in North Rhine-Westphalia and unites formerly three schools.

The building design pivot of the Cologne based architectural office 3pass Architekten was and is an organically shaped atrium, that is the project's heart, circulation area, meeting place, auditorium and light well. In order to emphasize the space's multilayered characteristic, the atrium's rear walls have been illuminated with continuous concealed grazing light profiles. The balustrade edge contains organic recesses with wood fillings that shroud adjustable track-mounted projectors for the illumination of the auditorium and stairs.

While the lighting devices in the library and cafeteria are mostly concealed and associated with the space's valuable dark wood surfaces, the bright class rooms are illuminated by continuous slender lighting profiles that can be perceived as staggered outlines from the outside.

The restrained exterior lighting concept is limited to light steles, floor grazing light originating from bench bases and uplighting for selected trees.
