The Darwineum, completed in autumn 2012, a theme park for experiencing nature and science within the Rostock Zoo, is unique in Europe.

Charles Darwin‘s history of evolution is not only depicted but made tangible on this 20,000 sqm with the help of a modern edutainment concept. The concept of this exhibition of the evolution offers adventures, science and learning about environment at your fingertips and challenged our museal know-how in a very special manner.

The first part of the museum with its only artificially lighted exhibition rooms and the rotunda as a centerpiece shows the different stages of evolution of life on earth. Affectionately naturalistically designed exhibits exposures in the diorama are vividly staged with the help of spotlights. The rotunda represents the centrepiece of the first area of the exhibition, within its centre the „basic cell“ is thematized in an interactive projection.

The directional lighting sets dramatic focus, highlights exhibits and joins in areas and keeps the room in the dark. Finally you enter a square room whose science-lab-like interior of which gives a glance of stem cell research as a continuation of the evolution. The interior of a stem cell is shown by an interplay of brightly back-illuminated textile membranes and blacklight.
