Spectacular Underground Museum Architecture – The Museum Goldkammer in Frankfurt

On May 25th, 2019, the Goldkammer Frankfurt opened its doors after four years of design, planning and construction as one of the most modern museums in Europe. In a succession of spectacular, underground tunnels and vaults covering 480 sqm, the Berlin exhibition designers from merz merz have created a suitable interior design for the various themes of the 500 gold exhibits.

The museum, which was built especially for the rare exhibits – and virtually around them – found its place under a historically protected city villa. An elevator takes visitors from the foyer down to the treasure chambers and into the world of gold.

Here, the rooms are dominated by four natural materials: clay, bronze, marble, and stone. Due to the special structural requirements, the architectural office merz merz created a number of small exhibition spaces, which, through their refined lighting, appear more spacious than they actually are. Concealed linear strip lights imitate incident daylight, while discretely placed accent lights create a mysterious and spatially suspenseful atmosphere. The exhibits themselves unfold in warm-white LED light from track lighting with the highest color rendering properties to display their full radiance. The wall-mounted showcases are fitted with miniature spotlights, which highlight the exhibits in an accentuating and glare-free manner.

The experience is accompanied by numerous animated boards and videos designed by the media planners ART+COM from Berlin. Along a gold vein on the ground, the visitor learns valuable facts about the precious metal at various digital stations. In addition, 18 gobo projectors are used to project room texts onto the walls.

Licht Kunst Licht underlines the dramatic composition of the Goldkammer’s innovative exhibition concept by emphasizing the valuable exhibits with integrated lighting elements in an unobtrusive, yet emphatic manner. The above-ground spaces of the two-storey building, for which the lighting designers have developed a custom-designed pendant light, invite guests to linger in the “Aureus Café”, a day bar and restaurant.

“The Goldkammer Frankfurt is in many ways a special building. The challenge of accommodating an exhibition in an entirely underground and extremely limited space was answered with an intelligent innovative concept by the designers from merz merz. Our goal was to underline their exhibition concept by an unobtrusive yet emphatic display of the exhibits via integrated lighting elements.”
