Early September 2021, the new building of the Cologne City Archive opened its doors on Eifelwall after nearly four years of construction, twelve years after the collapse of the Historical Archive in Cologne’s Südstadt. The building has since housed the Historical Archive and the Rhenish Image Archive under one roof.

For the indoors and outdoors public areas, Licht Kunst Licht developed a holistic lighting concept that integrates itself both atmospherically and serenely into the calm, timeless architecture and, with few exceptions, discreetly embeds itself in the ceiling plane. The new building is designed by Waechter + Waechter Architekten from Darmstadt.
